Widex at Piccolo Hearing

Widex comes up in two kinds of conversations at our clinics. One is the person who plays or listens to a lot of music and has been told Widex is the brand for that. The other is the person with tinnitus who has read about Widex Zen. Both are reasonable places to start, and both still begin with a free hearing test in Duluth or Houston.

Your results tell us whether a Widex family fits your loss and your lifestyle. At the fitting we program the aids to your audiogram and verify with real-ear measurement, so the sound you leave with is the sound your audiogram calls for, measured in your own ear canal rather than assumed.

Then comes the 45-day trial, with adjustments as you adapt, and ongoing follow-up care included with aids bought from us. Cleaning, wax guards, domes, receivers and small repairs are done in the clinic. Factory work is sent to Widex and tracked by us.

Bought your Widex aids elsewhere? We can usually service and reprogram them, with the usual exception for locked models and very old devices that current software no longer opens. We check that before quoting.

We fit most major brands, and a Widex recommendation from us means the test pointed there.

About Widex

Widex is a Danish brand owned by WS Audiology, the same group as Signia. The two brands keep separate sound philosophies. Widex has long emphasized low processing delay, the idea being that when the aid’s sound and the natural sound reaching your ear arrive at nearly the same time, voices and music sound less artificial. Its tinnitus program, Widex Zen Therapy, has been around for years and is one of the better-known hearing-aid-based approaches to tinnitus.

Current Widex families (October 2026)

Checked on Widex’s US site this month.

  • Widex Allure. The newest platform, in three rechargeable styles: Allure RIC R D (receiver-in-canal), Allure BTE R D (behind-the-ear) and Allure ITE R D (in-the-ear). Hands-free Bluetooth calling, and the Widex Allure app, which Widex designed to be simpler for people who are not comfortable with technology. Two charger options: a Standard Charger (about four hours to a full day’s charge) and a Charge n Clean charger that also dries and sanitizes the aids overnight.
  • Widex SmartRIC. A rechargeable receiver-in-canal aid with a short, slanted body designed to sit along the top of the ear like the end of a glasses temple. Widex lists up to 37 hours per charge and a portable charger that carries about a week of charges. It uses the Widex Moment app and supports SoundConnect streaming from a computer.
  • Widex Moment Sheer. The previous flagship, still current, in the sRIC R D rechargeable style. It uses the Widex Moment app and includes Widex SoundRelax, a set of fractal relaxation sounds that is part of the Zen Therapy toolkit.

Who tends to do well with Widex

People who notice processing artifacts in other brands, including some musicians and people who simply hear “tinny” or “echoey” quality where others do not, are often happier with Widex. People with tinnitus who want sound therapy built into the aid have a mature option in Zen and SoundRelax; our tinnitus page is honest about what sound therapy can and cannot do.

People who wear glasses all day sometimes prefer SmartRIC’s shape, since it sits differently on the ear. People who want a charger that also dries the aids, useful in Houston humidity, have Charge n Clean on Allure.

Streaming depends on your phone. Bring it, and we will test it in the room.

The hearing test decides. Reputation is a starting point, not a prescription.

Styles available

Widex covers receiver-in-canal (Allure RIC, SmartRIC, Moment Sheer), behind-the-ear (Allure BTE) and in-the-ear (Allure ITE). In-the-ear aids are built from a 3D ear impression taken in our clinic.

Care and troubleshooting for Widex aids

Allure and SmartRIC are rechargeable; charge nightly and keep the contacts clean. If you have the Charge n Clean, leave the lid closed so the drying cycle runs. A side that will not hold a charge is a factory repair.

Two apps exist, and it matters which one you install: Widex Allure app for Allure, Widex Moment app for SmartRIC and Moment Sheer. If the app cannot find the aids, forget them in your phone’s Bluetooth settings, restart the aids in the charger, and pair again inside the app.

Wax guards and domes are consumables. We stock Widex parts at both clinics and will show you the change.

Widex compared with other brands

In our clinics Widex is usually weighed against Signia, Oticon and Phonak. The honest answer is that all of them can be fitted well or badly, and the fitting is what you will hear. The brand differences are real but subtle, and the trial exists so you can judge them with your own ears.

Widex pricing follows the same pattern as other brands: family, then technology level, then whatever your plan contributes. Typical national ranges are in the hearing aid cost guide, and the benefit check is explained on the insurance page. Common questions

Can Piccolo reprogram Widex aids I bought from another clinic?

Usually, yes. We test your hearing, connect the aids in Widex's software, and refit them with real-ear measurement. A few locked models and some older Widex devices cannot be opened with current software, and we will tell you before any charge.

Do you repair Widex hearing aids?

Cleaning, wax guard and dome changes, receiver swaps and minor repairs are done in the clinic in Duluth and Houston. Case, moisture and rechargeable battery problems go to Widex for factory repair, and we coordinate it.

Is Widex covered by insurance?

Coverage varies by plan, and we verify your benefit before any purchase. We work with plan hearing networks including UnitedHealthcare Hearing, TruHearing, Nations Hearing, Amplifon Hearing Health Care and Start Hearing. Some networks include specific Widex levels.

How long is the Widex trial?

45 days at Piccolo, with adjustments during that time. Ask us for the trial terms in writing.

What is Widex Zen, and does it treat tinnitus?

Widex Zen Therapy is a tinnitus-management program that pairs fractal tones and relaxation sounds in the aid with counseling. It does not cure tinnitus. Many people find their tinnitus less intrusive with it, and we evaluate tinnitus with the hearing test to see if it fits you.

Which app goes with my Widex aids?

Widex Allure uses the Widex Allure app. SmartRIC and Moment Sheer use the Widex Moment app. We set up the right one and pair your phone at the fitting.
