Bernafon at Piccolo Hearing
Most people who walk in with Bernafon aids got them through an insurance hearing program, and most people who leave with new Bernafon aids chose them because the benefit covered them well. There is nothing wrong with that. A well-fitted mid-priced aid beats a poorly fitted premium one every time.
The process at Piccolo is the same as for any brand. Start with a free hearing test at our Duluth or Houston clinic. If Bernafon fits your results and your benefit, we order the aids, program them to your audiogram at the fitting, and verify with real-ear measurement so the output in your canal matches the prescription.
You then have a 45-day trial with adjustments included, and ongoing follow-up care comes with aids bought from us. Cleaning, wax filters, domes, receivers and minor repairs are done in the clinic. Factory repairs go to Bernafon and are tracked by us.
Bought your Bernafon aids elsewhere? We can usually service and reprogram them. Some locked models and very old devices cannot be opened in current software, and we check that before anything else.

About Bernafon
Bernafon is a Swiss hearing-aid brand owned by Demant, the Danish group whose flagship brand is Oticon. Bernafon has its own product line, its own fitting software and its own app, the Bernafon App, but benefits from the group’s manufacturing and research. It is positioned as a value-oriented alternative, and that is how it usually reaches patients: through plan formularies and provider networks rather than consumer advertising.

- Revita. The newest and most advanced family. Bernafon lists two AI networks for speech clarity, Bluetooth LE Audio streaming to iPhone and Android, and four technology levels named Revita 100 CONNECT, 200 GO, 300 ENGAGE and 400 PRO. Controlled by the Bernafon App.
- Encanta. The previous premium family, still current, in behind-the-ear and in-the-ear styles. Rechargeable models come with a compact charger. Bluetooth streaming, and a Music Experience program for fuller music sound.
- Alpha XT. A mid-range family in four configurations: miniRITE T and miniBTE T (disposable battery), and miniRITE T R and miniBTE T R (rechargeable). All have Bluetooth and work with the Bernafon App.
- Alpha. The entry family.
- Leox. Super Power and Ultra Power behind-the-ear aids for severe to profound loss.
Who tends to do well with Bernafon
People whose plan benefit includes Bernafon often get a current, Bluetooth-capable rechargeable aid with little or no out-of-pocket cost beyond the plan’s terms, which is worth checking before assuming you need to pay for a bigger name. People who want a choice between disposable and rechargeable in the same family have that in Alpha XT. People with severe to profound loss have Leox.
Streaming to iPhone and Android is standard on current wireless families. Bring your phone to the fitting and we will test it.
The hearing test decides. If your results call for something Bernafon does not offer, we will tell you.
Styles available
Receiver-in-the-ear (Bernafon calls it miniRITE), behind-the-ear (miniBTE, BTE and the power Leox) and custom in-the-ear are all available. Custom aids are built from a 3D ear impression taken in our clinic.
Care and troubleshooting for Bernafon aids
Rechargeable models charge overnight. Keep the charger contacts free of wax and lint, and make sure the dome has not slid up the receiver wire. A battery that no longer lasts the day is a factory repair.
Disposable-battery models in the Alpha XT family use standard zinc-air cells. Leave the battery door open at night to let moisture escape.
The Bernafon App controls programs, volume and streaming. After a phone update, if the app cannot see the aids, forget them in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, restart the aids, and pair again from inside the app. We can do this with you at any visit.
Wax filters and domes are consumables and the usual reason an aid seems dead. We stock Bernafon parts at both clinics and show you the change.
Bernafon compared with other brands
Bernafon is most often weighed against Oticon, its sibling in the Demant group, and against Unitron, which plays a similar role inside Sonova. If a plan covers one and not another, that usually decides it. If you are paying out of pocket, the 45-day trial lets you compare with your own ears.
